Audio not working on my iPad 3

I just loaded Skype on my Apple iPad 3 this wknd. and I am unable to get the audio working when talking to my son's Windows phone.  The settings in Sound are on for Ringer and Alerts and the audio on the bottom of iPad are maxed.  Is there another setting I need to turn on?
