Interesting, Skippy: On my MacBook Air (OS 10.9.4), from which I'm posting this, both Skype and System Prefs recognize my internal mic (the graph responds when I talk); but on my MacBook Pro (OS 10.9.5) at home, System Prefs recognizes it but Skype Prefs' Audio/Video panel doesn't. Both machines are running Skype 6.19 (452). That tells me that on my MB Pro it's either a Skype or Mavericks problem. You are running 10.6.8--which is still Snow Leopard (10.7 was Lion, 10.8 was Mountain Lion and Mavericks is 10.9). Your OS is at least 3 if not 4 years old. You might have a Mac, Skype and/or hardware problem if even System Prefs doesn't recognize your USB mic. Or the latest version of Skype isn't supported in Snow Leopard (or vice versa).
I had the same problem. The solution was to go into Skype Settings 'audio/video' and set the microphone to 'same as system'. This is the same microphone, so it shouldn't make a difference, but it does.
My Mac's microphone works fine, but my Skype test calls were unable to record my voice.
This solution (posted online by someone as a Linux fix) worked for me:
Open the Skype application preferences --> "Audio/Video" tab --> UN-check the selection for "automatically adjust microphone settings"
Have you tryed this solution?

My MacBook Air '13 doesn't see see the camera at all. In the meantime, any suggestions for video chat, or should I just purchase a PC? This is the third time!
(I just did the latest update, but it didn't help after trying earlier versions)
I agree with JRG-NL. Why should Skype video work on my MacBook Pro with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion and Chrome installed and not work at all on my MacBook Air with OS 10.9 Mavericks installed without Chrome???
I just bought a new MacBook Air with 10.9 Maverick installed. I installed Skype and have the latest version of that (version 6.12). When I try to make a video call, my video screen is blank. But, when I make a video message, the video works fine. I went to camera settings and it gives me the FaceTime camera as the only camera option and the camera preview is black.
HELP!
Update to Skype Version 6.9 (701) seems to have solved the problem.

I upgraded to Mavericks two weeks ago and am having similar issues. My webcam works only intermittently.
Can you clarify what hardware you have? Is it a 2013 MacBook Air? Does the problem happen after Skype video calls?
Also, which browser are you using? Do you ever use Google Hangouts video?
Skype video does'nt work on 15inch Retina on Mavericks either. I was already getting used to 3-way calls crashing Skype on Mountain Lion. I am now stuck with a non-working video conferencing application (which I pay for every month). And I didn't install my own drivers or anything.
I am currently looking for alternative solution, it will be hard to persuade collegues to buy macs and use facetime instead.
PS I also tried my external (logitech) webcam: doesn't work either.

Skype won't work on Newer Macs. Period. It's simple, Skype chooses not to support 64bit video and Apple took out support for 32 bit video.
This is simply not true. While Skype is a 32-bit application, it's wrong to say that Apple intentionally removed support for 32-bit video from any release. It was accidentally left out of 10.8.5 and they released a supplemental update to fix the problem. The relevant plug-in on Mavericks has both 32-bit and 64-bit components.
I have Skype 6.12.0.438 running on OS X 10.9.1 on a mid-2013 MBA right here, and the camera works. This isn't to say that the problem described here isn't happening, but it's not as categorical as you're saying.
The real answer will be for someone who is experiencing this problem to submit logs so we can have a hope of figuring out what's happening.
