I don't have Facetime on my PPC Mac G5 OSX 10.5.8. In fact I don't even know what Facetime is.
But the camera icon on my iSight is whited out. Untill quite recently it did work but suddenly it
has stopped doing so. The sound works just fine.
The video does work with other apps but not with Skype (version 2.8.0.722).
All "SOLUTIONS" presented here are just a FLUKE.. they work for a while and the problem reappers by act of magic.
Deffenetly, the camera does not work iwth the current version of Skype ( 6.4.0.833 )along the current version of mac OSX (Lion 10.8.3). If it does for you, it is just a fluke-
I was having the same problem after I recently formatted my computer and reinstalled everything from scratch. I really do believe at this point it's just some kind of glitch in the newer software version with the iSight camera. It shows that it is selected in preferences, however, no video shows.
I followed advice here and installed a backlogged version, and POOF! it works! Hopefully if it's just an update and not a clean install on future versions it'll stay working.
Thanks!!
playsinshop wrote:I had read this solution on other forums, but it did not solve my problem. (I rebooted before opening skype, had nothing else running, and still got the "video is turned off" error message.) I am putting my solution here for those unlucky ones whose problem is not resolved by the easy solution above.
I had this exact problem, suddenly, two days ago. I see from Skype forums and Mac forums that this is a very common problem. I spent 2 hours on Skype chat support (two different calls) with no luck. The technicians had not heard of the problem (!) and just kept saying try doing a clean install (uninstall and reinstall) which I did and didn't work. Finally, I copied an old version of Skype from a different Mac and copied it to my new computer (over-writing the latest version of Skype) and POOF! Problem solved. Clearly it is a glitch in the newest version of skype. If you are lucky enough to have an old version of skype on another computer, or a friend who has an older version: (1) copy your skype.app file from your other mac to a thumb drive, or email it to yourself--somehow get it to your new computer--and copy it into your applications folder. It will say you already have this file--overwrite? Say yes. Problem solved. (2) do NOT select "update automatically" as a skype option. If you do, you will always be among the very first to be derailed by a new bug. Let other suckers work through those problems. (3) when you DO update skype, before you download the new version, change the name of the previous version to something like "skypeJanuary2011" or "skypeOldVersion" so that it does not get over-written by the new version. Then if the new version is buggier than the old one, you can always go back.
Skype needs to offer older versions on their website for problems like this, but I don't think they do (?).
Just got the solution of this great issue on another thread :
Follow below steps to implement the solution:
1) Download attached file.
2) Unzip the file to get Plugin file in the downloaded folder.
3) Go to Finder>Go>Go to Folder
4) Copy and paste this into the search bar: /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/
5) Open the folder and move the current item in there (should be AppleCamera.plugin) to the trash or to any backup folder.
6) Replace that file with the new one (the one you just unzipped in Step #2)
It worked for me with latest versions of both OS X and Skype (till date).
All the Best!
It is easy, maybe u had your photobooth open and when photo booth is open with skype video chat it does not worked time just make sure your photo booth is not open.:womanvery-happy:

I am trying to use Skype through my Mac and the video is not working. when i go into PREFERENCES, then AUDIO/VIDEO, the screen for the camera part is black and it only show me the one option FACETIME HD CAMERA BUILT-IN. however, the camera does work on my other apps.
can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?
thanks.
The problem disappeared after I restarted my MacBook. (It is not a MacBook Pro.)
I looked at every thread and checked out everything on google....if you have are running the 10.8.3 for mac and have all the common sense **bleep** checked out first eg no other cam programms on....then the only thing that ive been able to get skype back up again was to goto oldapps.com and downloading Skype 6.0.0.2946 (32.79 MB) it worked
Anybody have any ideas why the camera decided to quite working on Skype with my mac, like a lot of the same problems you all have??
Microsoft seem happy to shunt out poorly sorted updates now, & they are forcing Mac users off of the last stable version (version 2.8, pre Tonka Toy Skype).
Unlike Windows Skype, you can get older versions of Skype on the oldapps.com website. Windows versions have been disabled there, guess Microsoft's view of that site is that it is giving users access to software that gives the bad guys an open door to take over the computer?
Guess the solution would be to try earlier versions from oldapps.com, until you find one that you are happy with?
My face time camera on my mac works properly but when I am on a skype call, it will not activate. All that happens is my photo will come up and the little dial just spins. Eventually, I get a message that says my camera is off. When I try to turn it on, the process starts all over. Contacted Apple and they confirmed that face time works properly and the camera is operating so there is something happening between skype and the computer. Any ideas? Thank you.

FaceTime stops Skype using the camera. Close both FaceTime and Skype (and PhotoBooth if that's running as well) then re-open just Skype and you should have your video back.
