I have a new laptop with Windows 7 Pro. I have downloaded latest version of skype and almost every time I try to make a call Skype tells me that it can't access my computers sound card. Why, and how do I fix it?

In your case and your case only.

1. Please stop any and all running Skype Client programs on your system.

2. Using your Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs uninstall Skype, when prompted to save your history, choose yes.

3. Using Windows File Explorer ("What you use to view files with") do:

%appdata%\skype

If you find a file called shared.xml right click on it and choose delete.

4. If you see a folder for the Skype name in question, click on it, if you see a file called Config.xml right click on it and choose delete.

5. Using the Windows file Explorer enter:

%programfiles%

Right click on the Skype folder and choose delete.

6. Please install the normal version using the instructions below:

You can install the current normal release by doing this from the top of this page:

Get Skype -> Windows -> Choose the normal release.

These instructions have worked for many and is the quickest thing to try to resolve issues such as this.

Also, what operating system are you on and do you have all Windows updates and updates to any hardware devices by the manufacturers?

Hi

I have tried what you have proposed but with no effect. The wirdest thing is that skype have worked  for 1 month (and yes i went beck to older setings) even the test with echo service worked just fine  five minutes ago. But when i have to make real conversation there is no sound card to be found on this PC.

My lap top is three months old (lenovo thinkpad W520, core I7 vpro, Conexant 20672 smaraudi speaker and microphone - both integrated).

Do you have any ideas?

Do you have all Windows updates and updates to your system any hardware devices by the manufacturers?

Generally new systems are months behind.

You should visit the Lenovo.com website and look for the latest updates for your soundcard:

If Skype has ever worked properly on your machine, try and do a system restore as far back as possible. It may be that you have unknowingly changed a setting or device that is not obvious to you. I did and it worked for me!

"Skype cannot access my sound card" - I have all but given up on this. I have searched through 100's of forums, youtube videos, upgrade software, downgroad Skype versions and at the last minute today I decided to check once again - boom!! Aleluhiah!

RUN SKYPE AS ADMINISTRATOR!!!

How do I run as administrator/

  - One Time: Press and hold CTRL+SHIFT when opening program.

  - Permanently: Right click on the program shortcut you use, go to Properties, the Advanced - tick the checkbox for "Run as Administrator".

That's it!

I am having the same problem with an Acer, so I don't think this is specific to any one PC.  I have tried everything from re-installing the audio driver to re-installing skype.  It might work for a call or 2 and then the same thing happens again.  It worked for the first 2 months I had the PC.  I have no idea what has changed.  I am running Windows 8.  Very frustrating and you can't call anyone for technical support.
