I have same issue, mic works when using Skype via facebook but not with just Skype.  Echo test fails, have installed, re-installed still doesn't work. Weird that it works when going in through the back door with facebook.

THANK you so much.   I made a Skype call three weeks ago and I had no issues at all.  My computer is set up to automatically update my Skype when I turn it on if there are any new updates as my computer updated with the new 5.5 version.  I tried to have a Skype call with a friend in Australia and I couldn't.  I kept getting the error message "Problem with recording device."   I tried everything to fix it.  Everything that I knew and some things that I didn't know.  I used the Skype website and tried many suggestions.  Nothing worked.  Until this evening when I found your antidote.  I tried your resolution and IT WORKS.    Thank YOU so much for posting it.   You are appreciated.

I can not make a call. It says a problem with the recording device. I believe the problem is on my side. I have a Microsoft Life Cam, the microphone is included. What couldbe the solution?

What do you see for Microphone settings in Tools -> Options -> Audio settings? Can you select the webcam's microphone there?

Sorry skype. When your so-called "upgrade" makes it impossible to place calls without negotiating with my interlocutors, it's not an upgrade. It was nice knowing you.

Thanks for the tip. I'm using a laptop which has a mic incorporated, but luckily I haven't thrown away my old usb phone! I plugged that in and then suddenly everything worked! I can make calls again!
