Implement full RTL support for Skype

Casual Adventurer

Hi there,

I think it's about time Skype would have a full support of RTL GUI, for Hebrew and Arabic users.

For example the users left pane should be a right pane.

A good example of a RTL UI is the top bar of "Help", "Tools", "View" and so on.

Is there any planning on this?

Is it the right place to suggest this feature?

Thanks.

Does someone has an opinion on this?

Hmm, since none answered yet + I've seen some other old RTL related topics, I'll post some of the bugs I've noticed in the latest version (not just the latest but the previous and pre previous ones).

All these bugs exist in the Hebrew version of Skype, don't know about others.

1. a. Configure Windows to have English + Hebrew languages.

b. Start writing to someone in hebrew (make sure you're writing in hebrew). DO NOT CLICK ENTER.

c. CAPS LOCK / Shift + some letters.

d. Delete everything written.

Result: Skype will start writing in small letters (english).

Expected Result: Skype should start writing in hebrew, like it should have in #b.

2. a. Change font to Tahoma 12pt for example.

b. Write some letters in hebrew (doesn't mattar which one). DO NOT CLICK ENTER.

c. CAPS LOCK / Shift + some letters.

d. Change back to hebrew (this wouldn't be necessary if #1 will be fixed..) and write some letters.

Result: Skype will start writing in default font.

Expected Result: You know already what..

Thanks.

Edit; Oh, wrong forum. Sorry.

REgarding your original question of mirroring the whole UI for proper RTL localization: I totally agree that a full localization do just that. There's some historical ballast in how the UI was coded that doesn't alloow for that to be easily changed, but it's something the developers are looking into for future iterations of the UI.

Do you have an ETA for this?

Thanks.

No ETA to share, I'm afraid.

Can you share an application that does RTL support very good? I'm happy to share a few examples that show that it's doable and working with our product team.

I'm glad you asked

- CDBurnerXP does it pretty well, it's almost perfect (I'm working with the developer to achieve a perfect RTL design, by all means). Some glitches here and there.

- TeamViewer- as far as I can tell- it has perfect RTL.

- WinRaR- has nearly a perfect RTL design.

- Media Player Classic Home Cinema for example has a perfect RTL design only in the main screen. The Options window is missing RTL UI.

- Adblock Plus for Firefox- has perhaps too good RTL design.

I can't think of more, if you really need I'll try to think of some.

Thanks.

Thanks again for coming back with these examples. That's really helpful. I'm sharing these with our product teams, but don't expect results in the next update yet
