What do you mean by "hiding"? You need to have and use an IP address to be connected to the internet. That IP address is not exposed to your Skype contacts though to protect you.

That is exactly my point, I do not want my Skype contacts to be able to see my IP address... there are internet services which hide your IP address, and I figured I might need one to hide my IP address. But as you tell me, Skype doesn't expose my IP address to my Skype contacts, then I won't need an IP-hiding service. Correct?

Thanks for your answer, Claudius!

It sounds like what you're looking for is a proxy. Since Skype supports proxies, that should be easy. Find a place that offers free SSH accounts (just Google "free SSH accounts" for a list), download PuTTY (again, links don't seem to be allowed, so Google it), and have it log into that SSH account, creating a dynamic port-forward on port 1234. Then open up Skype, go to the Advanced tab, and change "Automatic Proxy Detection" to "SOCKS Proxy", with host and port 1234. Restart Skype, and assuming you've done everything right, Skype will now be talking through a server in Europe or somewhere. Nobody you talk to through Skype will be able to discern your real IP.

This does, however, beg the question of why you want to hide your IP in the first place. I've been using Skype for a lot of things, and I've never had the need to hide my IP.

The most common methodology to hide IP address is to use a proxy server in one type or another. A proxy server may be a pc that gives a network service to permit purchasers to form indirect network connections to alternative network services. A consumer connects to the proxy server so requests a association, file, or alternative resource on the market on a distinct server. The proxy provides the resource either by connecting to the required server or by serving it from a cache. In some cases, the proxy might alter the client's request or the server's response for numerous functions.
