Skype won't update on Windows 8 computer

Did everything go properly?

After you entered the command "net stop wuauserv", did CMD confirm that Windows Update was stopped?

If you typed the rename commando, did he confirm the action? And also the "net start"?

Sometimes CMD doesn't want to rename, that's why you should cancel every update (maybe the windows update is running) but also the App Store.

If possible, add a screenshot from your CMD

Cheers

I managed to solve this problem, I think this might solve yours as well.

I based my solution on the steps above concerning the CMD prompts.

I have had the same problem. It was solved with:

  1. Open task manager & end the App store process --> Windows key + X
  2. Open 'CMD as administrator' --> Windows key + X
  3. Now enter in the following order:
  4. net stop wuauserv
    rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
    net start wuauserv

  5. You should be able to start your update now

WHAT you NEED to DO is:

during step 3 you are probably getting Acess is denied when you type in the command:

rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old

I don't know why this is so.

So after you type : net stop wuauserv in the CMD stop there.

find the folder SoftwareDistribution which is at c:\windows

right click it and uncheck the "read only".

Backup the entire folder incase things go wrong.

Open the SoftwareDistribution folder and delete everything inside of it, leaving the folder empty.

Now you can delte or Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder.

Then go back to your command prompt and type : net start wuauserv

You should now be able to update/install your skype. I hope this helps

When this folder is marked as read-only, it means that some process is using this folder.

When I had this 'problem', I had to cancel all windows updates & I had to end the process of the App store.

This folder contains the temporary files of Windows Update. That's why you have to stop the process: net stop wuauserv -> WindowsUpdate AutoUpdate Service

So if all update services are ended, you should have enough with the 3 lines in CMD. Otherwise you can't delete everything properly.

Thanks for all the help, I have finally managed to install skype using the command prompt, it was not working at first with the command prompt until I also stopped windows installer in task manager, I didn't need to go as far as deleting the SoftewareDistribution folder.

Hi Daan,

I have the same problem, but your solution didn't help. The 3 commands went fine, it just didn't help. Skype has disappeared (it had before) from my apps, but windows store says that I own the app. I can't find it though.
