fees for using Skype number

I purchased a separate subscription for a Skype number for my iPhone and my wife's iPhone, but when I used my wife's new Skype number to call my Skype number I received a message that she needed Skype credit added to her account.

Does the subscription "cover" Skype (number) to Skype (number) calls?

Online Numbers do not provide anything for calling telephone numbers, except that some of them (numbers in Chile, Denmark, Estonia, Hong Kong, Poland, Sweden, the UK and the US) can be used as Caller ID.  You would need to purchase Skype Credit or a subscription to cover calling to the Online Number.

If both of you are using the Skype app on your phones, just use that app and call each other using your Skype account names.  This would be a free call with Skype, just like calling any other Skype user.  You'd have to consult your mobile plans to know what limits or restrictions you have for using data on your phones, or contact your mobile carrier(s).  Using Skype on WiFi would avoid any potential charges or restrictions from the mobile carrier(s).

When I upgraded my 3g iphone to a 4g, I kept the 3g and had it unlocked (UNLOCKED by AT&T, NOT jailbroken!!) to use when traveling out of the country. It no longer has a phone number.  I've bought a data sim card from iphonetrips.com and I've installed skype...How can I buy a phone number for it so I can make and receive calls on this phone while I'm in Europe next month???  I've bought Skype credits, btw

Re: fees for using Skype number

With Skype, buying an Online Number only allows you to receive calls. You still need a subscription or Skype Credit to make calls. Log into your account by clicking on the "Account" link at the top of this page, click on Online Number, then ckick on the button to purchase a number.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've bought an online number and skype credits...so I can make calls. But I can't figure out how to make the online number active on my iphone so I can RECEIVE calls. Note that this phone no longer has a phone number...that got transferred to the 4g phone when I upgraded.

Just for fun I tried calling my online # from my home phone...it didn't ring anywhere, but I did get a message (that cost me $.11) that I'd missed a call from 'home.' I only want to use this to communicate with my friend who's traveling with me in case she wants to go shopping and I want to do something else or whatever.  It won't let me just forward my online # to my phone (can't forward a number to itself)...so will I have to buy another online number? Or do I need a "to go" #?

thanks for the help!

After purchasing the Online Number, make sure to set the Privacy setting for Online Numbers to allow calls from anywhere.  These settings are not accessible in the iPhone app, but must be set from the Skype program on a computer.  This isn't done automatically, since users have control over the privacy settings - even though almost all users enable this for all calls.

Re: fees for using Skype number

Sorry for the down time Patrick...and I do appreciate your help!  I THINK we've solved the problem by buying a cheap "pay as you go" sim card from T-Mobile, which gives me a phone number that I can forward my Skype number to.  It works EXCEPT FOR ONE THING:  with the LOCKED Iphonetrip sim in it (that will stay locked till the date it's scheduled to become active), calls are forwarded to it ok,..they show up on the screen as an incoming call from whomever...but the phone doesn't ring....doesn't make a sound.  My other AT&T 4g phone does ring when I forward my skype numbe to its number.

So my last question is: Is it the locked sim that's preventing it from ringing? Will it ring once I unlock the iphonetrip sim on the date it becomes active?

Again...THANK YOU!

Peggie

Buying a prepaid SIM that has a data plan on it is one way to go.  Otherwise, you would have to use your iPhone on WiFi and run the Skype app to receive those calls.  Doing it that way would be free for the incoming calls to your Skype Online Number or calls from other Skype users directly to your Skype account name.  It is possible that you won't hear anything from that other prepaid SIM until its start date, as you have noted.  You would have to contact that company to find out what's going on with that SIM.

I don't have an "accept as solution" button, or I'd click on it. This is a lot of new technology for a 70 yr old gal..You've been very patient in helping me plow through it. Thank you!
