Re: Skype no longer runs properly in the background on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01

So, I spoke too soon about the notifications "fix".  It's inconsistent, sometimes notifying, most of the time not.  Unbelieveable.

Or, I guess, for Skype: totally believeable.

Re: Skype no longer runs properly in the background on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01

[ Edited ]

Hi all, I purchased a Skype online number on the 7th December 2011 soley to recieve calls on the move with my iPhone (3GS), so I no longer have to carry a 2nd mobile on my person. The way in which the Skype online number was discribed sounded perfect for my needs.

But since going live its been nothing but a headache! All incoming calls go straight to voicemail as the Skype App/Phone never rings. I assume this is basically the same problem everyone else is having?

I've been trying all manor of fixes to try and get this sorted and frankly I've had enough. Can someone please point me in the right direction of who/where to contact for a refund for this basically pointless online number.

Your help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Skype no longer runs properly in the background on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01

Wait a second. I can't seem to find a way to enable notifications in Skype 3.6 for iOS (on iOS 5.0.1 on an iPhone 4S). Under Settings > Notifications, Skpe doesn't even appear!

Is it appearing for others?

Re: Skype no longer runs properly in the background on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01

im having my iphone 4 in lockscreen mode, i see and hear a skype-message income BUT it then disappears from the lockscreen! And when i "slide to unlock" the iphone, and pull down the notificacation-center..its not their either! AND i have everything turned on to show in notifications for skype, yes!

Re: Skype no longer runs properly in the background on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01

One other thing: notifications are enabled with the settings for the app itself. But Skype doesn't seem to be registering itself as an app with notifications (at least not under iOS 5), because if it were, there would be an alert asking for approval.

Is this everyone else's experience?

Hi,

We have released a new version of Skype for iPhone. Please upgrade to this version. It should solve your problem.

Re: Skype no longer runs properly in the background on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01

I've upgraded to the latest version of Skype (3.6.97) on both my iPhone 4 and iPad 1 (both running iOS 5.0.1). This version does stay online a little longer (it used to go offline after a few minutes before), but it still doesn't stay online permanently as it should (with the Skype setting "Go Offline" set to "Never"). With this latest version, it stays online for "hours" (it's almost impossible to time it exactly), but you cannot rely on it staying that way to receive calls and messages.

I've also noticed that, if you reboot your iDevice, you have to remember to launch Skype otherwise you will not receive any calls or messages until you do.

Note that Viber, an app Skype is often compared to on iDevices, has never suffered from either of the above issues (although Viber is far from perfect). Why is it they can get it right and Skype can't? Maybe Skype doesn't use Apple's push notification system, which means that applications don't need to keep running in the background, but can still be launched when calls/messages come in?

I'm a paying Skype subscriber as I use it daily for business and as such I rely on it heavily. It works as I need on my MacBook, but I really need it to work as reliably on my iPhone. Please Skype, can you sort this out?

Re: Skype no longer runs properly in the background on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01

I agree.  This app is terrible.  Viber works much better but I also have a skype in number, a subscription and I use this extensively for business.   The iphone app is virtually useless.  When it is working message notifications just get in the way.  I could care less about the message notifications and there is no way to disable them.  Incoming calls are unreliable and skype still goes offline all the time.

Re: Skype no longer runs properly in the background on iPhone 4 with iOS 5.01

Hi,

Unfortunately, 3.6.97 makes no difference whatsoever. I've even tried deleting and reinstalling, to no avail.
