I updated my Skype app yesterday and now I can't send SMS. It displays "That isn't a valid phone number" Yet it is the number I have been using for months and it works when I use my mobile network as vastly higher prices.
Has anyone else have this problem? Is this a software glitch or ....

I have the same problem and it's super frustrating... Is there anything that i can do to fix this. It's annoying that I was able to text for months and now I can't.

I've experienced this too with a Russian number in the format "+7nnn..." - i.e. excluding the 00 at the start - that format working in the past. (It's picked up from my Contacts list rather than the Skype directory.) It also wipes out the message that one has so carefully typed. It's a bug and you should report it via the Feedback option in the device and hope that their system testers get a rocket and we get a fix soon.
There's also an issue with it adding a zero to numbers stored in Contacts without one - i.e. in the format "+447nnn...". In this case a new "conversation" is started - i.e. one with the number "+4407nnn..." - so splitting it from the previous "+44nnn..." one. The Skype For Mac client doesn't do this so it's inconsistent - not to menton wrong.
I'm also annoyed at the replacement of the characters left counter with the cost as it was very useful.
