skype 5.8 can't share screen

hi, I've been using skype for a long time and i'm familiar with the screen sharing process. But ever since I upgraded to 5.8, it won't allow me to share screens anymore during a video call. I'm only calling one person. When I hit share screen, the dialog box that SHOULD pop up asking me which screen to select (i have 3 monitors), another message box appears instead, telling me to upgrade to skype premium.

HELP PLS!

I was surprised to see your post and was unaware of that change myself.  However, I just learned that you can still share screens in 5.8 without Premium but to do so you have to turn your video off.

It's more steps...video off...screen sharing on...when screen sharing is stopped, you can turn video back on, but at least you still can share screens.

omg, wow. i've been stuck and angry and frustrated at this problem for the last 12 hours haha. You are awesome. Thank you. >.< I wonder why skype now makes you do an extra step and without telling you either. Hopefully they fix that next update.

I have no clue why they made that change but I doubt it was by accident.

I'm glad you're back in business and I've thanked the gent who clued me in so we'd both know the new procedure.

This new behaviour was actually already introduced in Skype 5.7 Beta and is indeed very confusing. See this:

Thanks for the tip. But I still can't get screen sharing to work! Video off, share screen and watch the little whirl-a-gig spin round and round ad nauseum. Bummer.

Any ideas?

Is ordinary video working? Was screen sharing working on previous version of Skype?

So, I was the original poster complaining about screen sharing on Skype Beta 5.7. I knew about the extra steps and have turned the video off, but the Screen Sharing option is still unselectable (is that even a word? I'm pretty sure you know what I mean, haha.) So, is there something that I'm just missing this time around?

Is this a 1 to 1 video call, then if you are the one showing the screen, it should work, when you turn off your video and try.

Are you on the latest version? Which is 5.8.0.154? If not simply click the "Windows 5.8" link below and install over what you have now.

To determine what version you have installed now, using the main Skype window menu do: Help -> About Skype
