if you get pleasure from making installations, my comment is not meant to you. otherwise:
1. On Vista and Win7, auto-installations are interrupted by UAC
2. On XP, auto-downloads are prevented by
2.1 the firewall setting reported in the third and sixth post
2.2 a dummy file named SkypeSetup.exe in %temp% ,
given the security feature: Everyone - Full control - deny
enjoy your favorite Skype.

I agree with this post. I do not believe in allowing any entity to randomly access my pc for any reason. This computer is not and will not be an extension to any service providers network to do with as they see fit... thats why I have virus protection people. Who ever dreamed up this policy should not ne allowed to make any further management decisions in my opinion. I do enjoy skype but I refuse to be rail roaded.

I recommend a search for your problem and to download the latest Skype.
To get the most out of Skype I recommend Skype Premium.

[Note: Check out the screenshot for one of the first hints of Microsoft's involvement with Skype. Finally, we see confirmation that Skype will one day be handled by Microsoft Update.]

Ability to opt-out from silent updates
While we highly recommended keeping automatic updates turned on, there are some client environments where it's not an option. For these clients, we have introduced an option to disable the automatic updating of Skype. If you have disabled automatic updates, you will still see upgrade notifications and requests to upgrade to the latest Skype client.

Let me put it clear: I've got 5.1 and won't upgrade to 5.6 or beyond until I'll be sure that I can control upgrades. Nobody should pretend to change the behavior of an application or o.s. without my permission in my system. It's mine, not yours or anybody else's, so it's me who has to decide what it executes.
Moreover, from now on I will have Skype turned off as long as possible and will begin switching to another voip platform. I'll start right now to warn everyone at my reach about this great risk-taking if they do not avoid using Skype from 5.6 on until this gets solved.
Besides, I find a lack of respect towards the user the fact of offering, in the new-version announce window, a "What's New?" button which brings to a webpage containing everything except what it's meant to show.
Best regards to the Skype team. You've made a great product. But this is undue abuse.
