"skype has stopped working" error message

I got hit by some virus and since then I've been getting this message everytime I try to start Skype. I've uninstalled Skype, then reinstalled, and the problem persists.

Any suggestions? Pretty please, I love my Skype!

What version of Windows are you running?

Try resetting Skype's configuration files using this procedure:

Quit Skype.  Hold the Windows key and type r.  In the box that comes up type %appdata% <enter>.  Scroll down to find the \Skype folder and rename it something like \Skype_old.  Restart Skype.

Note:  Renaming the Skype folder will move IM and call history to the renamed folder.  They can be recovered with a few extra steps.

Re: "skype has stopped working" error message

Thanks for responding!

I tied the %appdata% and renaming the folder solution--still getting the same problem. Even after uninstalling/reinstalling Skype.

I'm running Vista Home Basic.

Before I try the reinstallation of the OS that was suggested by the previous poster, I'm hoping there is another, less drastic solution....

Thanks again---

Re: "skype has stopped working" error message

I'd suggest next you try the latest version of Skype, 5.8.0.156.  You can download the full installer via this link:  http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-full

If after doing that Skype still crashes, look in Event Viewer, Administrative Events, for any error reported with a time stamp of when Skype last crashes.

If you find such an error, copy and paste the results here.

Open Windows Event Viewer -> Custom Views -> Administrative Events. Look for any error messages with timestamp corresponding to Skype crash.

Here is what I think is the corresponding event, listed as an application error, event ID 1000, Task Category (100):

  <Provider Name="Application Error" />
  <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID>
  <Level>2</Level>
  <Task>100</Task>
  <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords>
  <TimeCreated SystemTime="2012-02-12T16:55:59.000Z" />
  <EventRecordID>172750</EventRecordID>
  <Channel>Application</Channel>
  <Computer>Eric-laptop</Computer>
  <Security />
  </System>
- <EventData>

You are using an old version of Skype, please update your Windows to the latest windows update. also update Skype as this is more important so you would have the latest bug fixes for the program.
