"Add a Contact" Window Problems
There are times that users are seeing just a blank page on an error message suggesting to "Check Your Connection" when they open the Add a Contact window (screenshots pasted below);
Below are some suggestions that may help fix such problems;
Check if Internet Explorer is not Offline
,regardless of the internet browser you set as default or prefer, as Skype uses IE engines. Check if you can access normal webpages using the Internet Explorer browser.
Clean and Clear IE
Delete Temporary Internet Files, clear cache cookies, browsing history , etc
Reset IE
Click Internet Options >> Advanced. Then click Restore Advanced Settings and Reset. Click OK then restart. Note: Resetting IE to default will remove any personalized IE Settings, Add-ons/Plugins, Configurations, etc.
You can also use the Fix It Option in the Page below to automatically reset IE to default;

Reinstall or Repair IE.
If the suggestion above doesn't fix the issue, open the link below and click the Run Now button to repair or reinstall IE
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378
Remove Content Adviser in Internet Explorer
Visit the link below for more details about Content Adviser and how to disable/remove it.
Temporarily disable your anti-virus or firewall
just to check if they are causing the problem. Don't browse any webpage or use other applications that uses internet connection while they are disabled. Immediately reactivate them after testing. If this solve the issue, then you may need to adjust or change some settings in your anti-virus or firewall.
Complete Skype Uninstall - Then Reinstall
This procedure differs from the usual uninstall as this will remove/delete almost all traces of Skype in your computer. This will allow you to re-install a fresh copy of Skype in your computer (preferably the latest version), and possibly fix the problems you are currently experiencing. Please visit the link below on how to backup your files and how to do the complete uninstall process.
How can I completely uninstall and then reinstall Skype?

If none of the above options work, try this one below because i had also the same exact problem about 'check your connection' and this solution worked perfectly fine for me:
1. From Start, type "Run" in the search box
2. Type in "Regedit' in the run box
3. Go to this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
4. Delete the "RPA" folder
I don't know what the key is for, but when I deleted this, the "Add a contacts" option worked just as it used to. Hope it helps ![]()

What if you just have a white screen, and that's it? It won't let me add contacts for some reason. ![]()

Are you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?
Which version of Internet Explorer installed on your PC?

I tried all of the above and I still get the "Check your connection" problem when trying to add a contact. I cleared and resetted both 32/64 IE versions, I completely reinstalled skype and deleted the reg entry Dhika suggested. I made sure skype is not blocked by any AV/Firewall. Using W7 64, Skype 6.0.0.120

Check Proxy settings
In Internet Explorer, Go to, Tools >> Internet Options... >> Connections>> Lan settings , Use a proxy server... if it had been ticked, then... Remove that check. Make sure automatically detect settings is enabled. (Marked)
Check Connection Settings
In Skype Click Tools >> Click Connection options...
type any port between 1024 and 65535
check this settings "use port 80 and 443.....incoming connections"
... if it had been ticked, then... Remove that check and try then.
