That procedure I described should also work for that I/O error.

Reboot before starting the procedure, or open Task Manager and make sure there are no Skype.exe processes running.

ok. closed 2 skype.exe processes in task mgr and fired it up again and the vid is working.
Hope it still works after a re-boot tomorrow !
do I need to undo the rename or will everything work ok with it set as skype.old? many thanks for your patience !

No, don't undo the folder rename.  The only thing that's there you might have any interest in is your calls and IM history.  If you don't need that, eventually you can just delete \Skype_old.

Hi there, after re-boot overnight I'm back to I/O error again so cannot log in. Another Skype folder has been created alongside the renamed one. I can't rename this again as it says its in use. I stopped a process called Phillips intelligent agent in case it was holding the webcam feed.

The Phillips Intelligent agent could indeed by preventing Skype from seeing the webcam.

Yes, when you rename \Skype to Skype_old, \Skype and all it's sub-folders and files are recreated next time you start Skype.  That's the whole idea.

You can rename again to something like \Skype_old2, etc.  Or, if you don't care about saving any call or IM history, you can just delete the \Skype folder rather than renaming.

Hi, still struggling here with the same problem, cannot get any video at all. Have deleted the skype folder, re-booted, closed skype in task mgr and closed phillips intelligent agent too, but still no video !

Do you have Skype set to start with Windows?  If so, try disabling that to see if it makes any difference.

No its already disabled. However for some reason the cam just fired up, but I know when i boot up tomorrow it will be off again. So something I have done is getting it working. I should not have to do all that stuff in task mgr & deleting files etc to get it going every time.

Well....it would seem the solution is to find get everything you're doing in Task Manager to happen automatically when you boot.

For example, if stopping the Phillips software let's Skype work, stop the Philips program from starting when you boot Windows.  And the same for any other task that you've stopped to get Skype working. 

That's the whole idea of the excercise of stopping programs in Task Manager to begin with.
