Step 1.

Please go here and once there, click on the "Fixit" Icon/Button: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949140

Then please do this:

Reboot.

Then please install over what you have from here, when prompted please click the run or open button: http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup.exe

Step 2 ("Only if Step 1 fails")

Note: In some cases even the "FixIt" button may not work and you will need to manually follow the instructions here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949140 if/when that happens using a Elevated Command Window Prompt.

Then please install over what you have from here, when prompted please click the run or open button: http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup.exe

Step 3 ("Only if Step 1 & 2 Falied")

Please go here and click "Run Now": http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

Then please install over what you have from here, when prompted please click the run or open button: http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup.exe

Note: The newer Skype clients use IE ("Internet Explorer") and Scripting programmatically, so IE as well as scripting, must be currently set up properly, even if IE it is not your default browser, or not used normally.

Why do I see files display?

When a Windows system cannot execute "scripts" since the script cannot be executed, the location/folder of where the script that cannot be executed is instead displayed.

Re: i get this when i login file:///C:/ProgramData/Skype/Apps/login/

followed steps 1 thu 3 and still have the same problem.  at each step when I reinstall skype the toolbar install fails with a 2738 error and I still am directed to the file:///C:/ProgramData/Skype/Apps/login/

running Win7 64bit SP1

Problems only occurred after upgrading Skype to 5.5

Re: i get this when i login file:///C:/ProgramData/Skype/Apps/login/

Tried the Fix It, IE Advanced Settings Reset, Skype reinstall ... still all the same issue with the Sign Me In link on the Welcome screen, when I hit it the page opens in my Google Chrome browser with a file path. Is there really no simple solution from Skype?!

What version of Windows and Internet Explorer do you have? Sometimes uninstalling the older version of IE and next upgrading to a newer version might help. Also try “Reset all zones to default level” in the Security tab.

Please try step 2 below, what happens?

Please follow these Steps:

1. Only do Step 1 if you are on WIN7:

Stop Skype.

Be sure that Compatibility Mode is not enabled (right-click on Skype shortcut icon/launcher and select Properties >> Compatibility) - for Windows 7 users only.

Try to launch Skype.

2. If Step 1 fails or you are NOT using WIN7 do:

Open an Internet Explorer browser, and go to https://login.skype.com/account/login-form?intcmp=sign-in&return_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsecure.skype.com%... what happens?

If it fails, Please do the instructions below. Using your Windows Control Panel, please do:

Internet Options -> Advanced Tab Please click the "Reset" button.

Then, Go to the Connections Tab.

Make sure that the only checkbox checked is "Automatically detect settings", then click the "OK" button.

Close any open Internet Explorer browser windows, open a new IE browser window and try https://login.skype.com/account/login-form?intcmp=sign-in&return_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsecure.skype.com%... again. What happens? If it works, please stop/start Skype What happens?

3. If Step 2 does NOT solve the problem:

Please install the normal version using the instructions below:

You can install the Current release by clicking this link: http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup.exe

Please do NOT remove what you already have installed, simply, install over.

These instructions have worked for many and is the quickest thing to try to resolve issues such as this.

Also, what operating system are you on?

What is the Make and Model of your computer?

Do you have all Windows updates and updates to any hardware devices by the manufacturers?

Same problem.

Went through this entire thread and tried all the fixes. Not one worked.

Im using Win7 Home Premium.

Skype only works now if I use the 5.3 versions.

Any other fixes/advice with this?
