failed to load d3d9.dll

Have been getting this message when loading Skype.  Skype fails to load.  Have downloaded and installed d3d9 file from MS to no effect.  Have re-installed Skype to no effect.  I can get Skype to load by reverting to an older restore point, but after MS auto-update runs, identical problem returns.

Any help/ideas?  Thanks in advance.

What is the DirectX version installed on your computer? It must be at least 9.0c.

Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe. This will start the DirectX diagnostics. See what version is reported and also if there are any error discovered.

All suggested reco's on Skype support network have failed, including re-downloading updated versions of various files and programs.  I did, however, find a solution at fixya that worked beautifully, though it cost $30 (well worth it).

Install RegInOut software (free download, but must pay $30 to register the program after running).  Run program to repair files and registries.  I accepted all recommendations, re-booted, and Skype loaded and now runs perfectly.
