Try resetting Skype's configuration files with this procedure:
Quit Skype. Hold the Windows key and type r. In the box that comes up type %appdata% <enter>. Scroll down to find the \Skype folder and rename it something like \Skype_old. Restart Skype and see if it runs normally.
Note: Renaming the Skype folder will move IM and call history to the renamed folder. They can be recovered with a few extra steps.

Thank you, that was a quick reply!
But unfortunately it hasn't worked. I tried twice. The symbol \ cannot be used in a file name so I called the first one Skype_old and the second Skype__old.
It's not running normally. Any other suggestions?? It has occurred out of the blue!

Ok. \Skype was meant to indicate it's a folder rather than a file but the \ is part of the path, not part of the name.
Backing up, assuming you did rename the \Skype folder, what exactly is happening now? When you start Skype, or try to start it, what are the symptoms you're seeing?
edit: Getting ahead a step, What version of Windows are you running?

Glad to hear that.
Can you share what your friend did to sort it out which may help others with the same problem in the future?

Download and Reinstall the latest version of Skype. See if it helps.

Check your Firewall / Proxy Settings; Also try restarting your router. You may temporary disable Firewall / Antivirus and then try running Skype.
Check all the browser settings to make sure they're not blocking them.
Check the firewall setting (Even if its off) check exceptions tab if the Skype are in that list. If not add the Skype.exe to it reboot and try them.
Under IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings, Use a proxy server... if it had been ticked, then... Remove that check and try then.
Check if the issue persists.
