can't update my skype?

skype 5.5 just came out, and mine is skype 5.3, but it won't update?  I tried uninstalling it and then re-installing it with the 5.5, but it still shows up as 5.3...  I am confused.  I go to the "help" and then "check for updates," and it still says that there are updates available.  But now it won't even try to download them at all.  It starts for like one second, and the little green download bar starts going, and then it just disappears, like it was just kidding around or something, lol.  Help?

I also posted another question elsewhere, but i'm not sure it's going to get answered (i put it on frequently asked questions).  I was talking with a girl, and for some reason, i couldn't see her video (even though her camera was working fine).  she could see me, though...  and it's not something stupid, like having a lens on it or not being downloaded- she was able to send me pictures she took of herself using the same camera.  So...  I do not know, lol.  Thanks

Please try downloading/installing from here and then chosing the open or run option: http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup.exe

Re-download Skype, install with FULL version from here,

When prompted please click the run or open button:

http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-beta-full/

Note That: With updating SKYPE sometimes your Firewall must be updated. You may need to change some settings in your Firewall.
