I am running Win7x64. Sometimes when im running Visual Studio and watching video alongside and the laptop is sitting on bed, the system become slow (perhaps because the air-in fan is at the bottom ?) Therefore, I use dock. But never with Skype.. Make sure, in your case the cooling system is intact and CPU and GPU is not frying in there.

I had the same problem and fixed it by changing the compatibility settings to Windows XP service pack 2. Tried service pack 3 but still had problems. I don't know if it made a difference but I also had skype run with admin privileges.
It's working smooth all the way for me know. No stutters on log in or calls. I would often hear the skype ring tone for up to 15 seconds after the other party had picked up. Seems to be all good now.
Sad they can't seem to figure out how to just get it to run on a 64 bit system though.

I've had Massive slow down lockups with the syncing, so if you have it enabled disable and that should make everything work better, I had massive fixes, was a god send :3

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?
What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?
Take a backup first. Only copy main.db file and pictures folder.

try uninstalling Skype with Revo (Select advanced options-remove all)

now try reinstalling latest Skype with this link:
