Skype won't save settings... any of them?

I'm using Skype 5.5 for Windows, on an XP.

I've never had this issue until very recently. Whenever I restart my computer or otherwise quit Skype, my settings (IM appearance/sound settings/privacy settings) are reverted to default, and it won't remember my password upon startup. When I just close my laptop (going into standby) Skype doesn't actually "quit," my settings are fine and I'm still logged in. Why is this happening? What can I do to get it to stop? It really pretty much sucks having to redo all my settings each time I restart my laptop or login on Skype.

Any help appreciated!

Re: Skype won't save settings... any of them?

Quit Skype using the Skype icon in the system try.

Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type %appdata%\skype, press OK button. Find now a folder with the name of your Skype account.

Open this folder. You will find there a file with the name config.xml. You may see only “config” but with XML Document in the Type column. Delete this file.

Restart your Skype and re-enter your personal settings. Save, and again quit Skype.

Are the settings preserved now?

This has been a problem for over 5 years. I wonder will Skype ever make the "Save" button save the settings for us.

Re: Skype won't save settings... any of them?

I now have same problem on Skype 5.1 on Win7, but the solution looks like different on Win7. I don't see config.xml in the suggested folder.

If anybody can help, I'd appreciate it.

Have you opened the folder named as your Skype name? Can you see there a file named "config" but with description "XML Document" (or similar) in the Type column?

I'm having the same issue, Skype is default every time I quit and restart Skype (prompt to select your picture, setup mic/speakers, etc.)  I looked in the prescribed folder (%appdata%\skype), however there's no folder with my screenname.... only Content, My Skype Received Files, and Pictures.  I searched for Config.xml and the file doesn't exist within the Skype folder.

It doesn't look like there's a security issue disallowing access to this folder (see attached, highlighted user is 'me').  Skype is the only app with this issue.  I looked up one folder and many other apps are saving settings in the parent folder just fine.  I also tried opening Skype with 'Run as Administrator' and got the same result, no settings saved.

Windows 7 x64

Skype 5.10.0.116

Re: Skype won't save settings... any of them?

try this.

go to Skype folder inside program files/(x86) and go to phone folder and then right click on Skype application and select send to Desktop (Create shortcut)

Re-run skype using this new shortcut.

Nope, tried running from Phone folder and this did not work. Still no settings saved. Tried it several times.

Just to clarify so I'm not doing something stupid:
- Start Skype, sign-in, go through setup (mic, speakers, ...)
- Everything is OK at this point
- Close window with X, minimizes to task tray (which is super obnoxious, but off topic)
- System Tray > Skype icon > right click > Quit
When I restart Skype no settings are saved.
