My skype, version 5.5.59.124, keeps on using way too much cpu (around 40-50%)
The only way I found to fix this is by deleting all the account settings and data for accounts from C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Skype
(all the temp files too)
But I don't find it useful to delete all my chat history and settings which I have to re-do every time once I delete it.
Sometimes it "fixes" by itself when I shut skype down for a few minutes and then start it again. Go figure that out lol.
I have tried reinstalling, installing a clean version with no previous data on the computer but apparently it fixes it only temporarily.
Anyway, let me know if someone else got the same problem.
Oh and by the way before the first time that I deleted my acc data and temp files etc it used up as much as 98-99% of the cpu and it made my fans go crazy.

I have the same problem. I hope someone from Skype comes on and addresses this issue. I am on Vista and Skype goes up to using a miniumu of 48% CPU with it going higher than that. This never occurred before with Skype and if this continues I will be forced to quit using Skype. Can anyone assist us with the unacceptable situation???

I have just "upgraded" to the Beta version of Skype... Version 5.7.0.123. I was previously using the latest GA version of Skype. Fingers crossed, but it has now been up and running for over 15 minutes and is using considerable less memory and 0% CPU, which is what one would expext when it is really doing nothing. I may suggest trying this for yourself and see what happens for you. I will explain that after I started the install of the Betya version it seemed to "hang" until I told the previous version to quit, then all isnstalled as expected. Good Luck... I hope this keeps working for me as well as working for you!

Just now the version I'm on is doing fine (except for yesterday) but who knows when it will start using up 40-50% of cpu lol

Same thing happening to me, skype using 30-50% of a desktop QuadCore (3.1Ghz) cpu and 400MB of ram.
Trying to downgrade to the beta, if that doesnt work. Its being uninstalled until its fixed.

Same problem for me using v5.5.0.124 on Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5420. See attached screenshot, you can clearly see when I quit skype!

Click 'Hide Ad' in the Skype Homepage (even if you don't have it open) and it reduces your CPU usage!

Thank you, this worked.
I had like 20% usage just from Skype on my Intel i7, and hiding the add reduced it to 0.
If someone is having trouble with finding skype home, click on "View" and then Skype Home.
