Same problems as you guys are reporting. CPU getting hammered. Quit Skype or "hide ad" and it stops.
Is anyone from Skype reading this thread or acknowledging there is a problem?

Also just for info, I cannot duplicate the problem nor the results.
I do have a subscription so I don't normally see those annoying ads, but I also have a couple of other Skype accounts that don't have a subscription. If I signon to one of them I definitely see the ads but my CPU use stays at zero if I'm not on a call.
I'm back to wondering if the CPU use issue is hardware/firmware/software related.
My system:
Win 7 Pro (x64) SP1
Intel i7 930 @2.8 GHz CPU
12 GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 9800GT graphics driver 2.8562
IE9 & Firefox 8
Microsoft Security Essentials
Skype 5.6.0.110
Flash 11.0.1.152
edit:
Tried the same experiment on a less powerful i3 CPU based laptop with the same results. Also on a 5 year old Win XP machine...same-o, same-o. Zero CPU activity when Skype is idling.

Maybe. You can get the full installer for v5.6.0.110 here if you want to give it a try:

Sorry to hear that obviously some ad is causing this problem to some users. Can you report back on which ad was showing when you encountered this CPU usage spike caused by the Skype.exe process?
Can you all confirm that it happens on the 5.5.0.124 Skype version (You can check your version in menu "Help -> About")?
I recommend to download the latest Skype and search first.
To get the most out of Skype I recommend Skype Premium.
