Skype keeps defaulting to start at windows boot

It now seems to be impossible to stop skype stop Skype running automaticaly wiith windows boot, every time you use Skype it forces itself to start again with reboot.

I have been trying to remove it from startup, using the skype settings, because of the new home screen and the heavy use of resources.  I turn the option under general settings to NOT start skype when I start windows.  For the next reboot this works, but as soon as I load skype to make a quick call, this options is set back to start skype with boot.  This process seems to cause skype to freeze at the login screen, with the notification icon showing connecting, I click on this and the log in window opens I log in and skype works.

This is becomming hopeless, will Skype stop at nothing to force its home page advertising on me?  Is there any way to permanantly stop skype running with windows start up, it is starting to become like a virus.  Next step will be to send advertising messages to all my contacts.

Re: Skype keeps defaulting to start at windows boot

can you try this one;

1.  Enter msconfig in the Run or Search Command

2.  Click the Startup tab

3.  Uncheck Skype

4.  Save (changes may take effect after rebooting)

Re: Skype keeps defaulting to start at windows boot

I checked and skype was not in msconfig (I had already unchecked startup again in skype). I can check next time skype loads itself at boot up but as I understand it shows that is removing itself from boot up, but is later on changing this setting back into boot.  Now I have verified it is not in msconfig then removing it again will not prove anything more?

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Can you please check your startup folder to see if anything is there which could be causing Skype to start at boot time?

Your startup folder is located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows User Id>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Re: Skype keeps defaulting to start at windows boot

Hi again,

I just checked rebooting my computer after there was no record of skype for start up in msconfig.  Skype did not load on boot, but next time I loaded skype to make a call, I went into options and found that Skype had checked the option to start with windows start up again.  I can not think of anything other than skype making this change, since it only happens after I run skype.

In your case and your case only.

1. Please stop any and all running Skype Client programs on your system.

2. Using your Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs uninstall Skype, when prompted to save your history, choose yes.

3. Using Windows File Explorer ("What you use to view files with") do:

%appdata%\skype

If you find a file called shared.xml right click on it and choose delete.

4. If you see a folder for the Skype name in question, click on it, if you see a file called Config.xml right click on it and choose delete.

5. Using the Windows file Explorer enter:

NOTE: If This is a 64 bit system, please look in the program files (x86) folder

%programfiles%

Right click on the Skype folder and choose delete.

6. Please install the normal version using the instructions below:

You can install the current normal release by doing this:

http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup.exe

These instructions have worked for many and is the quickest thing to try to resolve issues such as this.

Also, what operating system are you on and do you have all Windows updates and updates to any hardware devices by the manufacturers?

Re: Skype keeps defaulting to start at windows boot

Seems to have fixed it thanks, although it does address the problem in skype that actually caused this bad behaviour for me and all the other people you mentioned.

Cheers

Most likekly there was a setting that needed resetting in your case. Normally, other methods work to reolve this issue.

Cheers

Glad to know things are back to normal.

Re: Skype keeps defaulting to start at windows boot

I have the identical problem that Phantum described. I will try the solution presented and I am grateful to learn it, but this seems like a LOT of trouble to go through to correct a bug in an otherwise excellent product.
