Skype desktop not working. Logged in, can't make or receive calls Windows 8 Skype 6.11

[ Edited ]

Overnight my desktop Skype isn't working.  I can login but although the green tick online is on and I can see online contacts, I'm not able to call, receive calls or send messages.  When I click on the dropdown arrow to change status, the green online is selected but greyed out.  I appear online to contacts.  It literally happened overnight.  So I'm logged in but can't actually do anything.

The desktop version was so much better than Windows 8 (personally speaking) and I'd love for it to be fixed.

Has anyone else had this happen?   Any suggested fixes please?    Thank you.

Try to reset all Skype settings.

Quit Skype or use Windows Task Manager to kill any Skype.exe process. Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata% and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named “Skype”. Rename this folder to something different, e.g. Skype_old.

If you are on the latest Skype 6.5/6.6/6.7/6.9/6.10/6.11 version, then do also this:

Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %temp%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. Delete the DbTemp folder.

Restart Skype.

N.B. If needed, you will still be able to re-establish your call and chat history. All data is still saved in the Skype_old folder.

Hey. I'm having the same issue. Followed those steps and I am still getting a "can't connect" error.

Similar issue to OP. Can log in, but can't send messages or make calls. It is hilariously laggy or constantly not responding.

Was fine last night, but tonight nothing.

I've tried a reinstall. Total uninstall, completely wiping it from my computer and nothing. Tried the above steps suggested and still nothing. I'm out of ideas, and it's seriously frustrating me.

Please help me!

Try to uninstall the currently installed version and install the 6.9.0.106 version using this msi-installer:

After installing this version, make sure to disable the Automatic updates:

Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Automatic updates ->Turn off automatic updates

Re: Skype desktop not working. Logged in, can't make or receive calls Windows 8 Skype 6.11

same problem here. All was fine until last week before a crash during video call and since then nothing works. (I haven't change anything on my laptop, no new firewall, no new antivirus ect..)

I followed the steps to reset Skype settings, reintalled 6.11. not working.

I reset again, then uninstall Skype 6.11 and installed 6.9

I manage to signin but I don't have any contacts in my list. Nobody sees me online.

If I try to signout, it crashes and I cannot stop the process in task manager.

If I try to Quit Skype (right click on Icone -> Quit) same as signout, it crashes.

At least I can use it on my phone...

What version of Windows are you on (XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 )? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
