Skype crashes repeatedly after sign-in since late Friday 12/16/2011; download problems

I have used Skype chats, calls and video conferences for many years.  My last successful Skype chat was on Friday mid-morning.  Around mid-night when I tried to chat with my husband, it’s not working as soon as I typed the 1st letter. It gave me a message “Skype has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available”.

I tried several times before I uninstalled it, downloaded the program and re-installed it, rebooted the computer and re do the whole processes over and over.  Results are the same for the past 2 days with the messages mentioned above.

Downloading was not smooth either.  It gave me “The program cannot be downloaded” messages several times for SkypeSetup.exe, or asked me to download from other Skype site for SkypeSetupFull.exe which also gave me “The program cannot be downloaded” message.  Today 12/18, I also got 2 partial downloads --SkypeSetup.exe.o80grzx.partial and SkypeSetupFull.exe.y0ivwi3.partial.

When I finally got a good download, I uninstalled Skype, rebooted my computer before re-installed the Skype.  But as soon as I typed in the 1st letter, it gave me the message again.   “Skype has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available”.

I also notice that under the “Conversation” all items were grayed out except “apps”, and under “Call”, only “Call a Phone number”, “Audio Settings” and “Learn about Call Quality” are not grayed out.  By the way, when I clicked on “Call a Phone number”, it also gave me the same message “Skype has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available”.

Something is serious wrong at Skype and we cannot contact any of their staff!

Same here--it's been driving me crazy all weekend, and I can't use skype

same exact thing happening here....day 2 of "Skype has stopped working"...have been using Skype for years...first time this has ever happened and receiving no help as to how to fix....help if there's any out there

I am having the same identical problem.  I assume this is a system problem with Skype and there is probably a solution available.  Would appreciate any help.

I am having the same issues. Have been having them for days now. Same messages, unistalled reinstalled serveral times. Cleaned computer with disk cleanup, and defrag. This problem needs to be resolved quickly as my husband is out of town working, and this is our form of communication.

Same thing here.  Does any one have a solution?  We wanted to use skype during a 60th Birthday party to our children in AZ in couldn't stay connected.  Very disappointing.

I have the same issue on both my pc's and 2 of my friends.

Not sure if it is important but we are all on Vista and Windows 7
