Here is the best solution I just came up with when I got tired of seeing it

Just uninstall the piece of **bleep** new version and install an older version. Do a quick google search for skype 5.0 or click this link

go to oldapps.com and search for skype 5.0

Step 1. Close skype

Step 2. Uninstall Skype

Step 3. Download the version 5.0 that I linked

Step 4. Before installing the 5.0 version make sure you

DISCONNECT YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

The reason is, skype tries to download an update when you install it. If you disconnect your internet it will just install the one you already downloaded.

Step 5. Once it's installed, connect your internet again and log in to skype.

ENJOY

Step 6. If for some reason it's there again, click on tools > options > notifications > alerts and messages > and unclick promos. Hopefully that works for you.

Good call Abtinamir. Just downloaded an earlier version and problem solved!

Also good idea to disconnect internet after downloading and before installing.
But once you have installed skype don't forget to check your settings and untick "automatically download and instal new version when available" because you can be sure it will be ticked otherwise!

It seems an awful lot of people are complaining about this 'SKYPE Home window' enhancement, but the developers do not want to take any action to rectify this glaring problem.

On a final point - if we think there are problems with the latest windows version then take a look at the iPad SKYPE forum where the latest app has been so poorly implemented with very little functionality included, and many inherent bugs. I have had to uninstal my iPad app as well and revert to the iphone verion which at least works on the iPad!!

While I personally appreciate the effort on workarounds, I should not have to work around this problem. I'm taking abtinamir's advice about installing a previous version. I really hope everyone else does the same and doesn't upgrade again until there is a written confirmation from Skype that they no longer have this automatic Home popup. (I get it every morning on my laptop like clockwork - it's not just when I exit and restart Skype.) It's malware.

This is ridiculouy, how in the world was Skype unable to fix this after all this time?

Not only does the skype home page popup issue occur, I analyzed my cpu usage after finding cpu at 100% and its due to skype. When i cease using skype, (and after three shutdowns of the computer) my cpu usage reverts to normal.

needless to say, despite my love of skpye, it is off my systems until I resolve the issue. None of your fixes work, maybe this is due to ms screwing up another decent program that they took over.
