This is a recurring issue with all versions to date. Despite settings for auto-update it will not keep up or send notices. I must do all updates manually. Am I missing something?

There's a new update service installed and running with version 5.8. If you've updated to it, future auto-updates for you may work better. (I don't know for sure because I disable all auto-updates.)
If you haven't update to version 5.8.0.156 yet you can do so via this link:

This is TERRIBLE! Once again, the Check for Updates failed! I had version 5.8.0158 installed. I opened Skype and there were updates available! You don’t even know what version is current! That should be (in sane situations) clearly displayed on the home page or the download page!
DAMMIT! This Skype is ABSOLUTELY THE WORST INTERNET COMPANY WHEN IT COMES TO INSTALLING UPDATES!!! SHAME ON YOU, SKYPERS! YOU MAKE PEOPLE WASTE THEIR PRECIOUS TIME BECAUSE OF YOUR IDIOCY!
This sh*t doesn’t happen with other companies. The exception is RealPlayer (because you have to Sign in after each update).

A fatal error occurred during installation.”

I have the exact same problem. It has been going on for years. Wish I knew how to fix it. Skype would be so much better if they just focused on the "little" things.
