Not able to see contact requests

I am setting my Mom up on Skype, and from her Skype account we have sent a contact request to my Skype account and my husband's Skype account but neither my husband or my account can see the contact request.  I have also sent a contact request to my Mom's account from my Skype account and we cannot see it within my Mom's account.  HELP!!!  Why can't we see these contact requests?

unless things have changed, both the sender and the recipient must be online at the same time to receive such requests
