The latest update crashed with an error and since then cannot re-install Skype on windows 7/64 bit version.
I keep getting "the older version of Skype 5.9 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."
Then gives "Installing Skype failed; code 1603. A fatal error occured during installation."
Have deleted Skype folder, removed registry entries, config.xml, etc etc. Problem still persists.
There is no Skype installation when control panel is checked as well.
Help!

Good afternoon,
Am having the exact same issue myself. Any chance you have found a solution in the last few days?

Open Windows Event Viewer -> Application. What is the error message that you are seeing there?
Also, do you have the latest Service pack (SP3) for your Windows XP installed?

I have installed skype before and don't have any problems, except that when I add a new contact it freezes. so I decided to upgrade skype and install the latest version 5.9.
But it freezes on login screen. I'm using windows 7 32bit.
And here the error code from event viewer:

Hope somebody can give a solution for this.

The problem is with your Internet Explorer. Can you browse the net using Internet Explorer?
P.S. Please, don’t say that you are not using Internet Explorer. This is irrelevant. Skype depends on Internet Explorer.
