Error code 2738 after install

After an automatic update of Skype, I can no more login. Clicking on login gets me to the files on my harddisk. I'm getting the 2738 error and the message that the toolbars could not be installed. I'm using Internet Explorer on a Windows Vista 32 bits notebook (with service pack 2). I've already tried several of the solutions I found on the internet, but none worked for me. I am not at all a computer expert, so please if anyone could give me some easy guidelines on how to solve this challenge, that would be highly appreciated. Many thanks, Monique

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I ran the fixit program, but am still not able to login to Skype. Still being directed to the explorer. Also the other challenges I encounter since the Skype update are still all there. Any other suggestions? Or can I by any chance downgrade to the previous Skype version???

Thanks for the additional info. I'd think my updates are ok, since I do run them automatically. I've tried again to use the fix it option and re-install. Without success. Tried the manual option for the 32-bit computer and already on the first line I got a failure message: Cannot load module C:\Windowssystem32\vbscript.dll On the second line it gave the 0x800040005 error. I honestly have no idea where to go from here and any help to fix it is more than welcome! Especially since I live in a country where no computer stores are just around the corner...

Please go here and once there, click on the "Fixit" Icon/Button: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949140
 

Then please do this:

Reboot.

Then please install over what you have from here, when prompted please click the run or open button: http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup.exe

Note: If this fails you will need to follow the instructions manually from the "FixIt" page.

(In between power and internet failures) I did the Fixit, reboot and re-install with the same error message. Started the manual option and got the 0x80004005 error after point 3 (the line with jscript). Any other options left? I truly hope so!

Maybe you should try to complete the registration of the scripting files using an administrative command prompt. See here for how to open an administrative command prompt:

Ok, I can give that a try. When opening the page you suggested, I noticed it's a Windows 7 forum, whereas my notebook uses Windows Vista. Is the procedure the same?
