When trying to update my Skype to include Messenger or when trying to uninstall Skype Click-to-Call, I get an "error 2738" message.
I am aware this is an issue with vbscript but I have run my command centre and followed instructions given by others to register my vbscript and even though it says it was successful I still get the same error message when trying to install Skype.
I have Windows 7 and I used Google Chrome to install Skype.

I tried following your instructions on the Command Prompt and it said it was successful, but when I tried to open the HelloSkype file, this appeared:

Try to uninstall the current version using Add/Remove programs and then install skype using the mentioned msi-installer.
Alternatively, you can update Skype without using any installer.
Download, but don’t run this installer for the latest 184.108.40.206 version.
Using the procedure described here,
extract the Skype.exe file from the SkypeSetup_220.127.116.11.msi file and replace your currently installed Skype.exe with this new Skype.exe file. You will be now running the Skype 18.104.22.168 version.

Your method on how to revert back to the Skype I had before by extracting the Skype.exe file from the msi file worked! Thank you very much for that. However, I still wish to upgrade to the current Skype that has messenger integrated - and again, I get the error.
I tried fixing the vscript using the method provided but I can't seem to get it to work, despite Command Prompt saying it was a success. I really want to be able to upgrade ASAP. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Sorry, I'm confused now. The 22.214.171.124 version is the latest Skype version and you should have the option to login with Microsoft account. Is this not the case for you?

Not for me. Once upon a time I did have the latest Skype screen where I had the option to sign in with my microsoft account but one day when I turned my computer on the Skype window popped up automatically as usual, only it had went back to the normal Skype screen (pictured below). I literally did nothing to revert back to the old skype logic window.
Now when I go to update Skype it says I have encountered an error 2738, the toolbars cannot be installed and I get a blank Skype screen (albeit the updated one - pictured below).
It's confusing for me also.
Please, answer first these questions:
Is your Windows 32-bit or 64-bit?
What is the version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer?
In Internet Explorer go to Help -> About Internet Explorer.
P.S. Please, don’t say that you are not using Internet Explorer. This is irrelevant. Skype depends on Internet Explorer.
I have a 64-bit Operating System and IE9.
I've also went ahead and done the test on http://www.mistered.us/test/alert.shtml but to no avail. So, I followed the instructions given on that page and made sure that Active Scripts were 'Enabled' (it was already like this before-hand) but I still get no positive reaction from the test.
Go to Windows Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click on Command Prompt, select 'Run as administrator'.
In the Command Prompt type: cd c:\windows\syswow64 and press Enter.
Next type this and then press Enter:

After each Enter you should receive a message saying that DllRegisterServer in XXX.dll succeeded.
Reboot your computer.
Open in your Internet Explorer (no other browser but only IE 32-bit version) this page:
Click on the “Simply Click This Button” button and watch the response.
