I start Skype, enter my Uname and Pword and then get this message. Closing the message shuts down skype. I've tried everything I can find on the support site.
"Skype has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvienience."

What version of Windows are you running?
What anti-virus / firewall are you running?
Was Skype ever working on that computer and the problem just start happening recently?

Skype has always run well on this computer. Running the home version of Windows XP. The XP firewall is turned on (Skype is checked in the exceptions area). Also running Ad-aware. Those are the only security packages running.

Ok. Since the problem is a recent development, try resetting your Skype configuration files, to see if it helps, with this procedure:
Quit Skype. Hold the Windows key and type r. In the box that comes up type %appdata% <enter>. Scroll down to find the \Skype folder and rename it something like \Skype_old. Restart Skype.
Note: Renaming the Skype folder will move IM and call history to the renamed folder. They can be recovered with a few extra steps.

Tired it. Got the same message. Incidentally, one of the things I tried yesterday was removing Skype completely and redownloading it.

When you say "removing Skype completely," did you do a standard uninstall or did you delete all the folders, files, and registry entries?
I was going to suggest a "complete" uninstall as the next thing to try, if you haven't already done it. See this guide for the complete uninstall:

Okay, I gave that a shot too. Had no problem following the instructions, but to no avail. One good result though. This does not happen consistently, but occasionally now on skype start up while I still get the same message, underneath (as long as I leave the error message window active) I can operate skype. If I close the message, everything shuts down. Wierd.

I only have one more idea at the moment....try disabling Ad Aware. It's a long shot but worth a try.

I'd actually tried that the other day, but just gave it another shot. No effect. At this point I can't get it to load at all. It allows me to enter my uname and pword, then brings up the error message with the skype screen just doing the spinning thing (load up circle) in the background. It just stays stuck there...
