We have a fast broadband connection with no problems. The PC runs CAD and some other design programs. Skype has worked ok in the past. In the last week, no matter what else is running, the computer falls to its knees, constant freezes, and runs like an old XT. Even if everything is shut down, skype still causes the PC to run extremely slow, to the extent that the mouse will not move for up to 30 seconds. It is only Skype that is causing the PC to slow down. Once I eventually get Skype closed, the PC goes back to normal.
Any advice and help would be great. No changes in the PC, no issues with the internet service, runs CAD and Protel perfectly. Been happening for the past week.
Make sure that Skype is not running in Compatibility mode. Right click on the desktop shortcut (Skype icon), select Properties and then the Compatibility tab. No options should be selected there.
I have Skype 188.8.131.52. Help -> Check for updates sais that this is the latest version of Skype. I experience the same problem as ijmckee. Once per day my computer (HP Envy 8 processors, lots of memory) gets really slow. All running applications respond terribly slow. Taskbar shows that Skype uses a few percent CPU. After I quite Skype, the system works fine after about 10 seconds.
As a software developer, I generated thousands and thousands of files on my harddisk each time I recompile my code. My harddisk will become fragmented because of this.
I have defragmented my harddisk a few days ago. Since then I have not noticed these problems with Skype anymore. I noticed that Skype constantly writes a few hundreds of bytes per second on the harddisk. On a fragmented harddisk this might have caused delays in other applications.
