Can't uninstall skype toolbars - error 2738

I've had the same problem for several months on a Vista machine on which Skype had worked for years. Now I get error 2738 whenever trying to install or uninstall skype.  I've tried several different fixed, including the one here. Like SurferOftheSkie, none of these suggestions has worked.  It's extremely frustrating, and hard to believe that skype can't sort this out with a recommended fix.

Still searching and burning time to try to get this to work.

Thanks very much, Tamim.  Your suggestions have led me to the solution. The regsvr32 commands didn't have much effect, but the advice about IE9 was spot on.  I uninstalled Internet Explorer 9, which I never use but apparently was not functioning properly, and that did the trick. There is still a problem with the Skype Toolbars (cannot be uninstalled and fail on re-install), but skype now works. Fingers crossed!

Your problems with uninstall/reinstall of the toolbar are most likely still related to problems with Windows Scripting Engine. You may also try this:

Hi ruwim.

So I've been looking through all the support posts to try to fix my skype and have not been able to get it fixed completely. 

My computer symptoms seem to be most like Surferoftheskie's. 

Around November 2011, I tried to update skype and got the error message 2738 when installing call to chat. It said skype was installed though but when I tried to log in, it sent me to a windows explorer tab. I tried to uninstall skype and received error message 2738 when unistalling the toolbar. I looked through the support messages on this site and updated my internet explorer to IE9. 

I have done all the steps here:

I wasn't sure what to do for step 2. I did step 5 and got the same error message as SurferoftheSkie. 

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" /f does not exist/couldn't be found

and at first it didn't work, but i realized i did something wrong and now the test works. 

I used Ccleaner to clean my registry.

I now can log into skype (this occurred when I updated Internet Explorer to 9) but I still don’t have call to chat installed and cannot install skype toolbar. I am still getting error 2738.

My computer is running Windows 7, 64-bit. Script Version: Microsoft ® Windows Script Host Version 5.8. Skype version: 5.5.59.124

You are saying that you can now do this WScript.Echo "Hello Skype" test. This means that your VBscript engine works.

What are you actually doing in order to download Click-to-Call add-on and Skype toolbar.

Have you tried this site for Click-to-Call?

I don’t know if you also have Skype add-on installed on Chrome browser. If this is the case, then you should be aware that several users have reported that it was necessary first to uninstall Chrome in order to be able to uninstall the add-on.

The skype click to call does not install. I get error 2738. The toolbar installs but i cannot uninstall the old toolbar and do not want it on my computer if I am not using it. I get error 2738 everytime I try to uninstall it.
