that is... the screen shows the keypad but the green button is reduced to a very pale green! I have plenty of Skype credit and I have used call phones up to a week or so ago. Skype to Skype works fine for calls both video and audio. Advice appreciated.

Please try downloading/installing from here and choose the run or open option when prompted: http://download.skype.com/SkypeSetup.exe
If this fails, please delete your IE ("Internet Explorer") browser cache, cookies and temp files and try again using a IE browser window, even if IE is not your default browser.

Thnaks for your reply, but no luck .The only thing I couldn't do in your advice was to delete the IE cache ( no box to tick ). I use Mozilla Firefox. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Skype both in IE and in Firefox , but the problem persists . Could it have something to do with this "Skype Home Unavailable pleae try again later "etc which always pops up when I open Skype? It doesnt affect my going to call contacts and to do the echosound check though.

Please try install the msi version here, the goal is to install over what you have currently:
Please use this to install 5.5.0.117: http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_5.5.0.117
NOTE: You may need to uninstall first before going to a newer/older msi version for Skype in the future, so in your case, it maybe best to save this file as well. To install/uninstall using this file, simply right click on the file name and choose Install or Uninstall.

Have you actually tried to enter a number to call? The call button always appears disabled if no phone number is entered.

Bingo!! I did have a problem with people answering but not hearing me , so I thought that lack of colour in the green was the problem. I gues it was the microsoft lifecam audio. Thanks very much.
