I am trying to install Skype on my WIndows 7 machine. Installation fails with the following messages:
1. Pop up box states 'XXXXX' is not a valid short file name (where XXXXX is my user name).
2. after clicking ok, another box states: Installing Skype failed; code 1603. A fatal error occured during installation.
Could you please assist me?

Have you tried uninstalling first from your Windows Control Panel Add/Remove programs? If/when prompted to save your history, please choose yes, then try the latest install again:
Please click the "Get Skype" link at the top of this page and download the normal version of Skype, NOT the beta version to get this new version.
I do not have an existing installtion, so there is nothing to remove from teh Control Panel.
I have downloaded the latest version from teh Skype website and it is not a Beta Version.
Please copy/paste the link below into the browser window of your choice, and once on the page, click the "FixIt" icon/Button.
Then re-boot and copy/paste the link below into the browser window of your choice:
Hi, I too am trying to install a new version and am getting the Code 1603 error. Its also telling me that my version 5.3 cannot be removed and to contact tech support....help!
Please go to both these pages and then on each page, click the "FixIt" icon/button:
Then please re-boot and download from here: http://skype.com/go/getskype-full
I cannot install Skype, because the code 1603 is reported, then I have removed every trace from the control panel and also from the registry.
What is the error message that you receive before the 1603 message? The 1603 error message says only that the installation failed.
