You can try https://imo.im/ but the quality is not great.

Another suggestion that might work...a "portable" install.   You could create a portable install on a USB thumbdrive and then plug that thumbdrive in to a USB port on the PC you're using.  Doing that would elimininate the need to download and install Skype on that particular PC.

If that will help, see this link for instructions on creating the portable drive:

Re: Using Skype on the browser itself without installing the skype messenger on the system

Thanks for the tip.

I just tried imo.im and they now have the following message on front page:

"We are unable to support Skype due to our inability to connect to their servers. We don't know if we will be able to support Skype any time soon as it depends on factors out of our control."

I certainly don't want to get another account just to IM on a computer that won't allow downloads.

Skype - can you help?

Re: Using Skype on the browser itself without installing the skype messenger on the system

it won't be long till the thread that you have posting in is a year old, which is only one of many reasons why you should create your own thread for your own query

there is no browser-based Skype client yet, nor is there info on when there might be

btw, the 'portable' install does not avoid the requirement to download the Skype client for Windows -- in fact the 'portable' install is only a special way to set up the Skype client on your PC that Skype already supports, so the third-party is providing nothing more than a convenient way to accomplish this setup

Portable installation on a USB drive can be done on another PC and subsequently used on any computer without need of downloading any files.

ok, maybe not download, but the user must still acquire the client from somewhere, and they still have to run the client (not just use browser), even if on a USB stick

and the user does not have to go get a supposedly special 'portable' version of Skype to accomplish any of this either

neither Ruwim or I were suggesting getting ANY Skype software from IMO

you get the Skype client from Skype, not from imo

and yes, IMO does not support Skype any more, and Skype does not provide any browser-based version at this time
