New skype update 6.6 failing during startup

I'm running windows 7 and updated skype to version 6.6 and now skype fails 10 seconds after startup with the following message: a problem cause this program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. I received a messgae from windows support advising me to update to the latest version of Skype, which is what caused the problem . I have applied all windows recommended and optional updates, defragmented my disk, cleared all cookies and internet files  to no avail. I've never had any issues with prior Skype versions. Suggestions please?

You can uninstall current version of Skype from the control Panel and you can install Special Version.

http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-sse

and disable automatic updating of Skype.

In Skype, Tools >> Options >> Advanced >> Automatic updates >> Click on Turn off automatic updates >> Save Changes.

Open Windows Event Viewer -> Custom Views -> Administrative Events. Look for any recent error messages with timestamp corresponding to Skype crash. Copy and paste here the text from the General tab.

I'm having the same issue, except it's crashing immediately. The Windows Event Viewer says the KERNELBASE.dll has failed. Maybe replacing it will fix it? If not, then skype needs to deliver a fix ASAP...

Try to reset all Skype settings.

Quit Skype or use Windows Task Manager to kill any Skype.exe process. Go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %appdata% and then press Enter or click the OK button. The Windows File Explorer will pop up. There locate a folder named “Skype”. Rename this folder to something different, e.g. Skype_old.

 

Next go to Windows Start and in the Search/Run box type %temp%\skype and then press Enter or click the OK button. Delete the DbTemp folder.

 

Restart Skype.

 

N.B. If needed, you will still be able to re-establish your call and chat history. All data is still saved in the Skype_old folder.

Please install Special version. If still the issue persists then repost event viewer error log.
