Mic doesn't work, no sound card detected.

I've just purchased a brand new headset, a Logitech h110. I've tried to use it with Skype but can't because Skype tells me it can't detect my soundcard. I can hear everything clearly through my headset, but everything I have tried hasn't fixed the microphone problem.
I'm using Windows Vista on a Dell XPS 420 if that is of any use. I've never had any sound related problems before, but I've never tried to plug in a microphone.
Currently I have the headset connected through two mini jack leads into the front panel of my PC, but i've also tried moving these to the back where there are two other microphone and headphone mini jack ports. Neither of the microphone sockets have worked.
I've tried downloading the drivers for my PC from the dell website but all three downloads said they couldn't detect related software. I really am at a loss to fix this problem...can someone please help...thank you.
