Keep getting "encountered an error" popup message

A new user here, and not too happy. May be looking for another service soon if this keeps up. I installed Skype, uninstalled it and reinstalled. It will not stay working, keeps "encountering an error."

Using Windows XP Pro SP3. What gives?

Re: Keep getting "encountered an error" popup message

Open Windows Event Viewer and look for any recent error messages with timestamp corresponding to Skype crash.

Event Viewer shows info events, in sets of 3, one after the other: 1)Service started, 2)skype update shutting down due to idle timeout, 3)service stopped. Then above each of the service stopped events is an Error event. Here is the error events.

Faulting application skype.exe, version 6.2.60.106, faulting module skype.exe, version 6.2.60.106, fault address 0x0084e3c9.

Re: Keep getting "encountered an error" popup message

Most likely the problem is in conflict with some of the devices used by Skype.

You can try to uninstall the currently installed 6.2 version and install the previous 6.1.0.129 version using this msi-installer:

http://download.skype.com/msi/SkypeSetup_6.1.0.129.msi

You can also run the DirectX diagnostics tool:

Go to Windows Start and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe and press the OK button. This will start the DirectX diagnostic program. Run this diagnostics and save the results to a file. You may attach this file to your post. Perhaps some useful information on the system and potential problems will be to find in this file.

Be aware that you will have to zip this file before attachng it here.
