Is my microphone broken or is skype broken?

Hello all,

Recently I have come across this problem where my voice is not being picked up but every other surrounding noise is. My microphone was working fine yesterday which is what pushes me to not beleive my mic is broken, also, my friends that I am skyping can hear the clicks from my mouse and keyboard and music that is played back through my headset :S.
I'm extremely confused as to why my voice is no longer being picked up and worried that my headset may be at fault. Has anyone else had this problem. Does anyone know a fic for this problem? Prompt replies will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Re: Is my microphone broken or is skype broken?

I'm assuming you use a laptop and have either an analog headset (plugged into the 2 jacks) or a USB-based one

Skype HAS to be getting it's input from somewhere, so, assuming that your mouth is close to your headset mic, I doubt that this is the mic that Skype is using as there is no way it would pick up ambient noise, but NOT your voice

most laptops these days include a webcam AND a built-in microphone (you may see only a pinho;le near the webcam and you may not be able to see where the mic physivally is without referring to laptop documentation (and sometimes not even then)

unfortunately the built-in micrphone can be too close to one or both of the internal speakers, and/or it can pick up other unwanted noises (e.g. fan noise for example) that is transmitted through the casing of the laptop (e.g. keyboard activity)

go to Tools|Options|Audio settings and confirm that Skype is set to use the CORRECT microphone (I'm betting that there are at least 2 to choose from the the dropdown list associated with Microphone)

don't forget to Save when you make a change
