I have followed the directions to uninstall and reinstall Skype from the directions found in the FAQ, but still get these errors. "Error: The older version of Skype 6.1 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." "Installing Skype failed; code 1603 A fatal error occurred during installation." I then searched the entire PC for for "Skype" and deleted any folder or files associated with Skype and still get this error. I am using a Windows XP machine if it matters. I also am not sure if I was able to find all the Skype registry files and delete them.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Try removing the Skype program entries using Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (msicuu2.exe), perform all the steps with Admin rights...(Run as administrator)
msicuu2.exe Download Link:
Now try installing latest Skype with this link:
Alternatively, You can try Portable Version of Skype
I used the CleanUp Utiltiy and then installed. It finally worked. I had thought about using a portable version of Skype, but wanted to try and get a proper install. I do not understand why you cannot uninstall Skype using the Add or Remove Utility in Windows. I mean Microsoft does own Skype now. They should be able to make upgrading Skype much, much easier.
I have tried so many ways to solve my problem with removing an old version of Skype and this is the only one that worked! It also solved my problem with incoming video on a Skype call. I am so grateful -- now I can talk to my son in Germany and see him again. Thank you.
You can try this:
Download, but don’t run this installer for the latest 22.214.171.124 version.
Using the procedure described here,
extract the Skype.exe file from the SkypeSetup_126.96.36.199.msi file and replace your currently installed Skype.exe with this new Skype.exe file. You will be now running the Skype 188.8.131.52 version.
