Please make sure that you are indeed connected to the internet. Check your connection by opening the browser, for example. This sounds more like a connection issue.
I'm having the same problem with my Samsung Focus. I am connected to the Internet. I can open the browser on the phone and login to my Skype account there, just not through the Skype app.
