well ok i guess we have to bare with the lost of priveledges and i hope they do something about it since there have been so much complaints have a good night
Microsoft ruined skype, they ruined windows. I will never buy another microsoft product again. I've had nothing but problems with them. Mac? NEVER a problem. Microsoft sucks.
Interesting thread and I have to admit having had connection problems for about a week using the "Desktop" version, last night I downloaded the Windows 8 App version which to my surprise didn't have a problem at all. However, I intensely dislike the fact it takes up the entire screen and as the original thread states "No Tools Option" to my mind is just plain crazy, surely when working in a program you should be able to access the tools without having to go in a totally differant direction?
I suspect Microsoft will probably correct this fault in due course however in the meantime I've still got the problem in that my wife calls me and I have no idea she's done so since the speakers have stopped ringing and having looked at the majority of threads I'm still unable to see a clear answer.
Why should I need to have two versions of Skype on my laptop? I'll try to see if opening the Desktop version will enable the speakers again although when I close and quit the program I suspect there will be no changes when I connect through the App version.
I understand Windows Blue (8.1) is due out on 26th June but doubt this will correct the problems in Skype unless they list such under Options?
I faced the same issue like you, I have Toshiba Tab+UltraNotebook Win8 version, and I used Skype from Microsoft appStore, which is a very bad version from Microsoft.
Simple solution: uninstall Skype tile and download the desktop version for Win8, here: http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-w
I have now the tools option menu, also Skype taskbar icon and all works fine like in Win7
Thanks everyone for your concerns with win 8 skype, I thought I was losing my mind found out that I'm not alone, win 8 skype is NOT user friendly, ie, no tools, no options, I can't even find how to change phone number, names of contacts, the list goes on forever. I have learned most of the basics on Win 8 which I enjoy using, but Skype with win 8 I am baffled and confused. Just going to stick with my old version. Please Microsoft HELP
I think I have the same problem. Does the response sent to the original poster mean that to get to a page like I am familiar with in the W7 version of Skype (the one that has the options "Contacts Conversations Call View Tools Help" at the very top of the page) you have to download a different version of Skype if you are using the Windows 8 version of Skype?
I ask because I would like to have access to "Tools----etc" as well in W8. (The version I have not does not provide it, I cannot find it, my version is flawed, etc.) By the way,
If you install the “normal” Skype desktop version on your Windows 8 computer, then you will have all the same features available as you had on Windows 7 computer.
Thanks very much for taking your valuable time to assist this very new, unskilled Skype user! (I readily admit that I am not only new to my OS (W but also relatively new to Skype.)
A few months ago, I downloaded the then current version of Skype on my W7 desktop system & finally got that system operational. More recently, I acquired a new W8 laptop and I am now trying to get Skype set-up mainly for video calls.
I assume I have overlooked access to a page in the "Skype for W8" application I downloaded-- (v,184.108.40.206)--- on that laptop as I cannot find such a page in my W8 version that is on the laptop. My quandary in part is this: does a page exist on the W8 version similar to what I call the "home page" or interface page for W7, ie, a page that provides the following options listed at the the top of the page: "Contacts; Conversation; Call; View; Tools; Help"?
If so, how do I navigate to that page in W8? Or, does such a page not exist in W8? If so, I am puzzled as to how to uncover those functionality in the W8 version. Stated another way, how do I navigate to a page or pages with those options in the W8 version? (Remember, I am not very familiar with W8 yet.) If those options do not appear on a single page, are they there on multiple pages and how to I access those pages? NOTE: At this time, when I open Skype in W8 I see a single page and I am unable to navigate to other pages from that page as I do not see any page forward ot backward buttons, etc. OUCH! I am stuck on that single page which basically allows me add contacts!
I hope you can help me farther on this matter as I am at wits end. I have spent many hours search the Community board, doing goggle searches, reading the scant info I uncovered on Skype help, etc.
Please be advised that I understand my questions are very rudimentary for someone with your knowledge and experience. I hope you are not offended by my lack of knowledge---as it reflects my inexperience with both Skype and W8 for which I apologize. I sincerely hope I can gain a bit of additional guidance...and thanks in advance for your advice.
P.S. Could you give me a reference that depicts the W8 home page? I am wondering if I downloaded the "wrong" version. Also, is the version I cited above the most popular one for W8 use or should I select another? (If so, which one do you recommend and do I need to uninstall the current v. before downloading an alternative?---Again many thanks for you assistance.
I just read your response and I am making a copy for myself as I may wish to accomplish the feat you just described someday on my W8. (Your directions apply to "regular W8" versions, right?
The point I wanted to make is to commend your writing skills. Very well done and most helpful to this novice!
