Re: [error] "Can't start video. Try closing other programs that might be using your webcam.&amp

Thansk for your reply

If I systematically end the processes as you suggest I assume I should have skype open as I do this and keep checking video settings in tools in skype. Is this correct .

I am not sure I understand your instruciton on "At some point, your video should work, you can use this Check Your Audio and Video Devices link and launch and then stop it after stopping this or that process."

Do I need to download this or can I just  go lne by line in task manager processes

thanks

You are very welcome.

Yes, you would need to have Skype runnning while killing processes.

You can simply click on the link each time to see if you can access video, and exit if you cannot and then kill another process and then click the link again and so on.

you can easily find it out by comparison.

instead of skype, use a different program that wants to use your cam.

my personal favorite is the tiny program "amcap" that came with windows xp particularly for testing video devices: http://bit.ly/xflXzh

[i would not be totally surprised if it turned out that even in amcap your cam is not recognized. since one of the machines that I am supporting is an asus eee with a built-in cam, and it is showing the same symptoms. definitely no competing program stealing the cam. case unresolved.]

"DX" indicates an involvement of DirectX. that's a different case than the ones discussed in this thread. would you, please, open a new thread: http://community.skype.com/t5/forums/postpage/board-id/Video

Re: [error] "Can't start video. Try closing other programs that might be using your webcam.&amp

Hi,

Thank you very much for your advices.

From your post, I uninstaled the Skype, downloaded a new one, installed it and test a video call again. However, I have still not used webcam yet. The message was the same before

"Can't start video. Try closing other programs that might be using your webcam"

I opened Tools/Option/Video Settings/. And I only saw the black screeen of video test with a waiting simple rotating clockwise.

-------------

Could you show me how I should do now

Best and Regards,

Han

Re: [error] "Can't start video. Try closing other programs that might be using your webcam.&amp

I am running Windox 7 x64, with all s/w updates.  I am running the latest version of Skype (5.8.0.156).  I have a stardard webcam that works perfectly well when I run amcap.  I have downloaded and run Process Explorer, searched for #vid and nothing is returned.  I have rebooted.  And still I get the above error message...

Reading this trail I realise many Skype customers are encountering the same problem... so please could someone explain why solving the problem is so difficult?  Is is really beyond the skills of Skype programmers to identify the program that might be using the webcam...?

And... please tell me what to do next... other than use the Task Manager to delete each process, one by one, constantly retrying skype until, having removed all my security s/w someone gives me a virus and I lose the whole system...
