While you are traveling, are you needing to call back to US? Any other places? Skype's subscriptions are based on the destination of your calls, not where you are located. If you need to call back to the US, the Unlimited USA (or Unlimited USA & Canada) subscription is ideal for that, at US$ 2.99/month. Or you can just purchase Skype Credit if you don't plan on being on the phone a lot. Calls to the USA are charged at 2.3 US cents/minute, plus a small connection fee per call. Calling Alaska has a higher rate at 6 US cents/minute, plus the connection fee. Or will you need to be able to call other countries?
If you do not plan on using a computer/laptop while on your trip, and you are not able to put the Skype app on your mobile phone, you may be able to get Skype To Go numbers that will let you dial a number and access your Skype account - including any Skype Credit or subscriptions you have for calling telephones. Click on "Skype To Go" below for more about that.
