Skype Groups

Issue: I am added to a the company skype group which I only use when I am at work and the same skype account is also used for personal. The company where I work is a 24/7 environment so the skype group is in constant use. I do not want messages bombarded when I login to skype or even when I am logged in message coming to me.

 

Solution Available: The only solution at this time is to leave the conversation i.e.. To leave the group and no messages will come.

 

Preferred Solution: It will be great to able to keep the group in inactive mode so the messages and updates only come in when you make it active again.

Hi, sunmeetb, and welcome to the Community!

 

Whenever I am involved in a project and cannot readily participate in a group chat, I do not leave or exit the group; I simply close the chat.  When I am ready to monitor the dialogue and participate, I re-open the chat from either Recent or my Contacts list as I saved the chat groups on my Contacts list.  If there has been a lot of traffic, sometimes it takes some 30 seconds to a minute for the stream to catch up.

Elianem...could I ask a question regarding something you said.  I'm currently enrolled as a participant in about 4 Skype Groups (SGs).  You mentioned being annoyed at hearng th 'bleeps' of messages going on in those groups you're a member of but weren't actively participating in at the time.

 

I hear the same thing although it doesn't particularly bother me.  Somebody...you or somebody in the thread...said something about 'closing' and 'reopening'.  Is that kinda like deactivating the conversation?

Hi, atwill4, and welcome to the Community!

 

One of my colleagues pointed out to me that what I suggested, above, of closing a chat window, actually does not

a. remove you from the chat, or

b. stop the noise/beep alerts

 

Please allow me to re-phrase and clarify!  I have since learned that if you are granted permission by the group chat host to do so, you can depart and re-enter a group chat.  Here is the link to an informative article on the subject:  https://support.skype.com/en-us/faq/FA1005/How-do-I-start-a-group-instant-message  and https://support.skype.com/en-us/faq/FA10042/What-are-chat-commands-and-roles

 

There are actually two easily changed settings that can stop undesired alerts.

- Starting at the Contacts list, click Tools -> Options -> Sounds.  Un-check Incoming IM or Mute all sounds -> Save.

- OR, Tools -> Options -> Notifications -> un-check Starts an AM with me -> Save.

 

Whichever route you choose, you can simply go back and change the settings when you decide you wish to hear audible notifications again.
