I had skype version 3.someting and it worked fine. When I opened Skype this morning it updated to the latest version but on the window where you must enter your login details, there are no edits or buttons where I can type it in. The menus work fine though. I am running Windows 7 64bit. What could be the problem?

Please, answer first these questions:
What is the version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer?
In Internet Explorer go to Help -> About Internet Explorer.
P.S. Please, don’t say that you are not using Internet Explorer. This is irrelevant. Skype depends on Internet Explorer.

I have IE 9 installed on my pc. I have also followed these steps but it did not help: http://community.skype.com/t5/General-Discussion/S
I guess its because I'm running Win7 and not Vista.

These instructions were for a 32-bit system. Yours is 64-bit.
Go to Windows Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click on Command Prompt, select 'Run as administrator'.
The Command Prompt window should show:
C:\Windows\SysWoW64>
If what you are seeing is:
C:\Windows\System32>
then in the Command Prompt type: cd.. (2 dots are important) and press Enter.
Now you should see this in the Command Prompt:
C:\Windows>
Next type cd syswow64 and press Enter.
Now you should see this in the Command Prompt:
C:\Windows\SysWoW64>
Type this and then press Enter:
regsvr32 jscript.dll
Next type this and press Enter:
regsvr32 jscript9.dll
After each Enter you should receive a message saying that DllRegisterServer in XXX.dll succeeded.
Reboot your computer.
Make now the test showing if your Internet Explorer can execute JavaScript.
Open in your Internet Explorer (no other browser but only IE 32-bit version) this page:
http://www.mistered.us/test/alert.shtml
Click on the “Simply Click This Button” button and watch the response.

I'm not sure how to run IE 32-bit version so I just opened the IE9 that I have. It still did not work. I did get the "DllRegisterServer in XXX.dll succeeded" Skype still shows only the background.

Have you received the "DllRegisterServer in XXX.dll succeeded" message both when doing regsvr32 jascript.dll and regsvr32 jscript9.dll?
Open again your Internet Explorer. When the browser opens look at Help | About Internet Explorer. If there's no mention of 64-bit, the 32-bit version is the default.
If it appears that your IE opens the 64-bit version, then go to Windows Start and in the Search box type C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe and then press Enter. This will start the 32-bit version of your IE.
You can use the procedure described here to reset all IE settings
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
Try again the JavaScript test.

Yes I have received the "DllRegisterServer in XXX.dll succeeded" message both times.
I'm useing IE 32-bit.
I have followed the instructions to reset IE: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
but when I try the JavaScrip test, there is no response when I click on the "Simply Click Me Button"

Firefox threads JavaScript differently from IE and Skype needs IE.
Have you rebooted your computer after finishing the dll registrations?
Open again your IE and go to Internet Options -> Security tab. Click on the button “Reset all zones to default level”. The security level for the Internet zone should show now “Medium-high”.
If this still doesn’t help, then you can try to uninstall IE9. Windows should in this case revert to the older IE8
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/how-do
Do again the JavaScript test.
